How We Test

No borrowed photos, no spec-sheet roundups. Here's what goes into a PawPicksLab guide.

We start with a long list

For a typical roundup we begin with 12–20 candidates, drawn from what owners actually buy, what readers ask about, and the products brands are pushing hardest (those get extra scrutiny, not less). Then we cut anything that fails on the basics before testing even starts.

We use the gear for weeks, not minutes

Survivors go into daily rotation in real homes — with Labradors, fosters, senior dogs, and cats who treat every perch as a landing strip. We track durability over weeks: how foam compresses, how seams hold, how a toy degrades, how a litter controls odor on day thirty, not day one.

We score on consistent criteria

  • Durability.Does it survive real, repeated use by the animals it's built for?
  • Safety. When something wears out, does it fail safely?
  • Everyday practicality. Cleaning, washing, assembly, and storage.
  • Value. Whether the price matches what you actually get.

We keep guides current

Products change and get discontinued. We revisit our guides, retest when needed, and stamp each one with a “last updated” date so you know how fresh a recommendation is.

We earn commissions when you buy through our links, which funds the testing — but it never changes a score. More on that in our affiliate disclosure.
